Mark Whitney built an incredible two-legged walking Robot that could actually navigate the arena and find and extinguish the candle. Unfortunately, due to the complicated walking motion, it was so slow that it could not possible win a cash prize. However, the judges were so impressed with Mark's ability, cleverness and spirit to build a device even though he knew he had no chance of winning that they awarded him a special Certificate of Achievement and two PIC programming books from Square One Electronics. The Connecticut NASA Space Grant Consortium also awarded him a $100 certificate.
Ake Tangpinijjit, a 21 year old Mechanical Engineering major from Chiangmai University in Thailand had never been outside his country before and yet came, literally half way around the world, to compete with a Robot of his own design and construction. He impressed everyone with his courage, dedication and desire to learn. Joseph Bosworth of Robot Press awarded him a Certificate of Outstanding Effort and a T-shirt.
